Arizona Appliance Rebate Program
NEW! Rebate program will begin April 12, 2010 Rebates will only apply to purchases of qualified Energy Star appliances made after receiving a rebate reservation on April 12, 2010.
Telephone or website reservations will be taken beginning at 6:00 a.m. (Arizona time) on April 12th. Phone number and website will be provided when information becomes available.
On Monday, December 14, 2009 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) gave final approval to award $6.2 million to the Arizona Department of Commerce Energy Office to implement Arizona’s Appliance Rebate Program funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The program has one key objective: help individual consumers replace old and inefficient appliances with new Energy Star appliances that are generally 15%-50% more energy efficient than appliances that are not Energy Star qualified. |

GLOSSARY
MEF - Modified Energy Factor: a measure of energy efficiency that considers the energy used by the washer, the energy used to heat the water, and the energy used to run the dryer. The higher the MEF, the more energy efficient the clothes washer.
WF - Water Factor: measures water efficiency in gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity. The lower the WF, the more water efficient the clothes washer.
kWh - Kilowatt Hour: a unit of energy equal to 3.6 megajoules. The most common use of the unit is when energy is delivered by electric utilities to consumers.
EF - Energy Factor: the ratio of useful energy output from the water heater to the total amount of energy delivered to the water heater. EF is a metric used to compare relative efficiencies of water heaters. The higher the EF is, the more efficient the water heater. EF is determined by the DOE test procedure, Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Section 430.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question Why is Arizona's appliance rebate program starting in April? Answer Arizona and the majority of other states will begin the appliance rebate program in April. Most of those states that have already begun their rebate programs had a similar program in place prior to the Recovery Act. Click here to view when other states are beginning their appliance rebate program.
Question Why is Arizona only providing rebates for clothes washers, dish washers and water heaters? Answer Appliances were selected with Arizona in mind. These appliances will not only save energy, but will also reduce water use and that’s a great combination of savings for those of us who live in the arid southwest.
Question Why aren't clothes dryers included in the Appliance Rebate Program? Answer All appliances included in the Appliance Rebate Program must be Energy Star certified. Energy Star does not label any model of clothes dyers because most dryers use similar amounts of energy, which means there is little difference in the energy use between models. Click here for more information from Energy Star.
Question Why aren't electric storage tank and electric tankless water heaters able to earn the ENERGY STAR and thus ineligible for the Appliance Rebate? Answer (link to more Energy Star information) Both electric storage tank and tankless water heaters can not earn the ENERGY STAR because they have limited energy savings potential. The most efficient electric storage tank water heaters on the market have an Energy Factor of 0.95, which represents 4.8% savings over the minimum federal standard (Energy Factor = 0.904). Electric tankless water heaters fare only slightly better. The best performing electric tankless water heaters have an Energy Factors of 0.99, which represents a savings of 8.7% in comparison to the Federal Standard (Energy Factor = 0.904).
This technology has little to no room for improvement. The perfect electric (storage tank or tankless) water heater could not exceed an Energy Factor of 1.0 due to this technology's physical limitations.
