Arizona PV Price Survey

Even as the new federal incentives, regional action, and the new Renewable Energy Standard and Tariff in Arizona combine to create a healthy increase in demand for solar product, one thing has kept the industry from soaring in the past year: polysilicon. Polysilicon, the main ingredient used to create most solar electric panels (and semiconductors), is in short supply.  Because silicon accounts for more than 30 percent of the raw-material costs for solar cells the shortage has lead to a big problem for solar businesses.  The implications have been higher prices. Production is not expected to catch up to demand until 2008 at the earliest and 2010 at the latest.

But the rise in prices for solar modules is being offset by lower costs for components and increased government incentives.   Costs for inverters and balance of systems are falling.  Additionally, global policy spending on solar is expected to increase from $2.3 billion in 2006 to more than $16 billion in 2010.
