HISTORIC ARIZONA MINING TOWN GOES MODERN
WITH “WI-FI”

Superior, AZ – There’s a new dawn in Superior: a bustling downtown, a healthy economy.   Today, this vision begins to unfold as the old mining town located in Central Arizona launches its high-speed Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) network.

“The addition of broadband enables students, citizens and businesses of Superior to participate in 21st century technology,” says Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.

“Because of this work, Arizona now has its own model that can be replicated in almost any rural area.  Arizona communities will benefit as we continue to move Arizona’s economy toward innovation and a knowledge-based economy.”

Bringing wireless, high-speed Internet infrastructure to Superior will facilitate economic growth, business development, and improve information technology in schools.  It also provides high speed internet access at an affordable price in a rural community.

“Together, we have achieved many accomplishments in a short amount of time,” says Superior Mayor Michael Hing.

“Volunteers dedicated time, sweat and dollars on this project; now we can grow our business economy and a talented, skilled workforce.”

Wireless connectivity demonstrated Wednesday by students from Superior High School showcases how citizens can now research information on the Internet from anywhere in town.  Other educational opportunities include plans for an online business courses offered through Central Arizona College, and continuing education courses for local teachers.

The goal of high-speed wireless internet was realized through public-private funding.

The business community in Superior provided $10,000 in matching funds for the wireless service project. The Town of Superior invested $25,000. In addition, the town received a $270,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Business Enterprise Grant program and a $35,000 grant from the Commerce and Economic Development Commission in support of this initiative.

WI-VOD Corporation was contracted for the project.  The Wi-Fi network provides the citizens of Superior with ubiquitous broadband Internet access while in their homes and while mobile within the town.
